History of homosexual in China
In 1896, Benkert, a German doctor, created the word Homosexuality. He defined this single word to represent those who are attracted by people with the same sex. Now, people are more likely to call them gay. But actually, it has a long history, in China, before the homosexuality was created.
In some history books of China, you can find some descriptions about homosexual. In the Book of Han, it record that the emperor sleep with his minister. So you can come to a conclusion that gay in China has a history more than about two thousand years.
However, in the traditional China, people are not likely to accept homosexual accord to morals. The ancient people always think it a disease and a dirty thing. Even today, there are many people can not stand it and still think it a dirty thing though medical community denied the idea that gay are people with mental disease in the early 1900s.
On April 20, 2001, the third edition of “Category and diagnostic criteria of mental disorder of China” was published and made a clear define with gay. It also adopted the idea that homosexuals are not exactly the people with mental disease.
